Can highly reccommend Car Cool Rangiora - Paul was able to fix my air conditioning issue at a quarter of the cost... quoted by two other local car repair firms. My issue was cooling not working, only blowing warm air. The two other firms advised after investigation that I would need to replace the whole air con unit and that it was not repairable, when in actaul fact, it was an easy fix. Thank you Paul.read more

Travelling through New Zealand my car overheated. Lucky for me, I met with Paul from Car Cool radiators in Rangiora. CAUTION ADVISED! My vehicle developed overheating problems when passing through Rangiora. I rang Paul at Car Cool... thinking a radiator flush might help and was told that my model of vehicle would just as likely need a new radiator as they are prone to clogging badly and can't be flushed - this was an instant red flag. I popped in and Paul filled the header tank with water with the engine running and declared that there were two strong indicators of a cracked head - red flag number two, (there are other tests such as checking to see if there is water in the oil, also I told him the heater wasn't working which suggests a broken thermostat, and no fluid was escaping from anywhere - in any case the head gasket could have been the problem but Paul went straight to "worst case scenario"). Paul suggested I go to his mate's workshop for a second opinion - if I get a second opinion on something it will usually be from someone independent of the original source.Unhappy and wary of the diagnosis, I managed to limp back to Christchurch and got a mate to look at the vehicle - guess what the REAL problem was? I needed a new thermostat! Paul suggested that the cost to repair the probable cracked head was around $2000, however a new thermostat and radiator flush, (which my mate suggested we do at the same time), cost around $30, labour was a box of beers.At the very least Paul's diagnosis was flawed, but I can't claim that he was dishonest, (this review is based on facts not on my impression of him...). Also, I can't understand how my experience was so different to the many locals who have rated him highly, though I note that a number of them are from people with only one review to their name which I'm always dubious about, and many lack detail.I wouldn't recommend this service based on my experience, and note that his quoted prices aren't any better than other garages I contacted.ADDENDUM: I've read the response to this review from Paul, it's very plausible though somewhat selective in the points addressed. I'm not willing to get into a debate about my experience and stand by what I've written. I note that Paul states he suggested the head gasket was possibly cracked though this isn't entirely accurate and could be misleading - Paul suggested that the cylinder head was cracked, (he even drew a diagram so there's no mistaking his meaning).read more
